1969: The Stonewall riots.
One of the most significant events in LGBT history. Riots by LGBTQ+ people were sparked after police raided the Stonewall Inn a famous gay bar in New York City. Activists groups, formed as a result and the Stonewall riots are now remembered as one of the most important catalysts for modern LGBT movements worldwide.
Marsha P. Johnson, a black transwoman, was a fundamental figure which made the riot possible.
1970: The first Gay Liberation Day March.
Was held in New York City, similar events are held in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
1978: The rainbow flag.
Gilbert Baker and Lynn Segerblomare are the two artist activists who contributed to the creat the iconic rainbow flag, which is first used as symbol of gay pride for the first time at the San Francisco Pride in 1978.
1989: Same sex relationships are legal.
Denmark becomes the first country in the world to legalise same-sex partnerships.
2000: Same sex marriages are legal.
Vermont becomes first state to legally recognise civil unions for gays and lesbians, followed by Netherlands in 2001. President Bill Clinton names June Gay and Lesbian Pride Month.
2009: Assault on LGBTQIA+ people is
recognised as a crime.
President Obama signs law making it a federal crime to assault someone because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. In the same year Obama declares June LGBTQ Pride Month.
2019: Pride is celebrated in 150 locations.
96 member-states of the United Nations have to this year sponsored the declaration in support of LGBTQ+ rights showing a constant increasing world-wide support over the last decade.
2020: Same sex marriage is legal in 29 countries.
29 countries allow Gay Marriage, joint adoption by same-sex couples is legal in twenty-seven countries. Most of Pride Parades are postponed due to COVID, but that won’t stop the pride to shine less!
